Where THIS woman creates

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

Ok, artists of the world, I know you have all seen those beautiful pictures from the studios/workspaces/lofts of artists – you know the ones – everything is orderly, there are pictures on the wall, cubbies for all of the supplies, paints arranged in color families, pencils sharpened, floor clean, etc. etc. – I’m making myself giddier than a glue sniffer!  If you are not one of those fortunate souls who can work like this, join my club!  This picture shows you where I create, every single day.  I have a gorgeous view throughout the year – our house backs up to a marsh, right in the middle of the city of Virginia Beach, VA, and I have the opportunity to watch Nature at her best!  If you look closely, you can see a squirrel on the window sill.  I put food out for the squirrels and birds during the day, and for the raccoons, possums, foxes, and whatever else might be roaming around at night.  If you check an early post of mine, you can see pictures of Mikey, my little raccoon friend, who now is fully grown, but still coming to me in the yard at night….

I know that when you open the book Where Women Create, or look at the magazine, you see how beautiful the spaces are!  Mine will never make that magazine, not even come in close, because on a good day, it looks as though I dumped a lot on the table – probably I have, and on a bad day – well…..I know it is time to straighten up when the easiest of my tools cannot be found!  I have a feeling that there are more of us artistic slobbes (trying to make this word look good!) than there are those who can create without stretching work around the house.   I don’t eat on the kitchen table – that is my workspace.  We gave up eating in the dining room – finished product rests there.  So, it is tv trays in the family room, and somehow we are doing just fine!  I’d love to hear from you – do you REALLY have those orderly places where you create?  In my mind, if everything is strictly conforming and in place, your creativity doesn’t run wild.  Maybe I am just trying to justify not cleaning……………..
